Wax build up creeps up on people. One morning your hearing is fine, the next it sounds like someone has put a hand over one ear. Most people put up with it for weeks before doing anything about it, usually because they are not sure where to go.
You do not need a referral and you do not need to wait. We will look in your ears, tell you honestly what we can see, and if there is wax to remove we will remove it there and then.

If you have ear pain, discharge, bleeding, or a sudden change in hearing that came on out of nowhere, please see your GP first. Those are not wax symptoms and we would rather you were checked properly.
Two ways we remove ear wax, and how we choose
Some clinics only offer one method. We offer both, because ears differ and so do the reasons wax gets stuck. We will have a look first and recommend whichever is right for you rather than whichever we happen to have in the room.
Microsuction
Microsuction uses a small suction device and a microscope so we can see exactly what we are doing the whole time. No water goes near your ear, which makes it the right choice if you have had a perforated eardrum, grommets, an ear infection, or surgery on the ear in the past.
It is quick, and most people find it more comfortable than they expected. There is a bit of noise, which we will warn you about before we start.

Water irrigation
Water irrigation uses an electronic pump to flush the wax out with body temperature water at a controlled pressure. It is gentle, and for softer wax it often clears the ear faster than suction.
This is the modern version of what people still call ear syringing. The old metal syringe was retired years ago because of the risk of injury. The equipment we use now is a different thing altogether.

Looking for ear syringing in Lincoln?
A lot of people still search for syringing, and it is worth explaining what happened to it. Most GP surgeries stopped offering ear syringing because the old manual syringe carried a real risk of damaging the ear canal or eardrum.
What replaced it is water irrigation, which does the same job with an electronic pump, controlled pressure and warmed water. If syringing is what you were after, water irrigation is what you want. We offer it, and we will talk you through it before we start.
What happens at your ear wax removal appointment
We have a chat
A few questions about your ears, your general health and anything that has happened to them in the past. It takes a couple of minutes.
We look inside
Using a video otoscope, so you can see what we are seeing on the screen. Most people find this the interesting bit.
We agree a plan
We will tell you what is there and which method we would recommend. If there is no wax, we will say so and you will not be charged the full amount.
We remove the wax
Usually ten to twenty minutes for both ears. You are welcome to watch on the screen or look away, whichever you prefer.
We check and advise
A final look to make sure both ears are clear, then some straightforward advice on keeping them that way.
The whole appointment takes about thirty minutes. You can drive straight afterwards and go back to work if you need to.
How much does Ear wax removal cost?
One price, both ears, no add ons.
If we look in your ears and there is nothing that needs removing, you will pay a reduced examination fee (£25) rather than the full price. We are not going to charge you for work we did not do.
Includes full examination, removal by microsuction and/or water irrigation depending on what is best for your ears, and aftercare advice.

Our clinic is on Manor Lane in Welton, about fifteen minutes from Lincoln city centre, with free parking outside.
It is a straight run north on the A15 and there is space directly outside the door, which most people find easier than driving into town and paying for a car park.

Common questions about ear wax removal
Does ear wax removal hurt?
No. Most people describe it as odd rather than uncomfortable. Microsuction is noisy, and irrigation feels a bit strange as the water goes in, but neither should be painful. If anything does hurt, tell us and we will stop.
How long does ear wax removal take?
Around thirty minutes for the whole appointment, with the removal itself usually taking ten to twenty minutes.
Do I need ear drops before ear wax removal?
It helps. Olive oil drops for three to five days beforehand soften the wax and make removal quicker and more comfortable. It is not essential, and we can usually still help if you have not had chance.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
No. You can book directly with us.
Is ear wax removal free on the NHS?
It depends on where you live and your surgery’s policy. Some practices still offer removal, many no longer do, and where it is available the wait can be considerable. It is always worth asking your GP first. If they cannot help, we can.
Is it safe if I have had a perforated eardrum or grommets?
Usually yes, but microsuction rather than irrigation. Tell us about it when you book so we can plan properly.
Can I drive after ear wax removal?
Yes. There is no anaesthetic and no after effects that would stop you driving.
What if there is no wax there?
We will tell you, and you will pay a reduced examination fee instead of the full price. We will also point you towards who to see next if something else is going on.
Do you offer ear candling?
No. There is no good evidence it works and it carries a genuine risk of burns and blockage. We would rather remove the wax properly.
